There are several ways to store basil to ensure it stays fresh for as long as possible.
Here are five different methods for storing basil:
- In a vase of water: This is similar to storing cut flowers. Simply trim the stems of the basil and place them in a vase of water, making sure to keep the leaves above the water line. Change the water every few days to keep the basil fresh.
- In a plastic bag: Place the basil in a plastic bag, making sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing the bag. Keep the basil in the refrigerator, but be aware that it will only stay fresh for a couple of days.
- In a paper towel: Wrap the basil in a damp paper towel and then place it in a plastic bag. The paper towel will help to keep the basil hydrated while the plastic bag will help to keep the basil fresh.
- In the freezer: Chop the basil and place it in an airtight container or plastic bag in the freezer. This will help to preserve the basil for several months.
- Drying: Hang the basil upside down in a dry, well-ventilated area or dry the leaves in a dehydrator or oven. Once dry, store the basil in an airtight container.
